Solar Red Flags

Don't get burnt by solar! Avoid these common solar red flags and be in the know!

1. Vague or Overpromised Savings

Red Flag: “You’ll never pay an electric bill again!”

What to Watch: Make sure any savings claims are backed by clear financial projections that show how they're calculated. Ask how utility rate changes, weather, or system efficiency affect long-term savings.

2. No Discussion of Shade or Roof Condition

Red Flag: The installer doesn’t ask about trees, roof age, or structure.

Why It Matters: Shade, poor roof condition, or an outdated electrical system can reduce performance or add hidden costs. A trustworthy installer will assess this upfront.

3. One-Size-Fits-All System Designs

Red Flag: They offer a quote without asking about your energy usage or future needs.

Watch for: A proper system should be tailored to your specific consumption habits, not a generic package

4. Lack of Transparency on Products Used

Red Flag: They offer a quote without asking about your energy usage or future needs.

Watch for: A proper system should be tailored to your specific consumption habits, not a generic package

Simple, Clear, and Built Around You

Red Flag: You're rushed into financing or not told when payments start.

Stay Sharp: Understand the loan terms, especially:

  • When your first payment is due

  • Whether the loan transfers if you sell your home

  • Whether it requires a balloon payment or escalates over time

6. Missing Permit or Code Conversations

Red Flag: They don’t mention permits, inspections, or local utility rules.

Why This Matters: Solar must meet building and electrical codes and pass inspection before you can turn it on (get “Permission to Operate” or PTO).

7. No Discussion of Insurance or Monitoring

Red Flag: No mention of homeowners insurance updates or system monitoring.

Smart Move: Ensure your insurer is aware and check if the system includes lifetime online monitoring (and what happens if the monitoring plan expires).

8. High-Pressure Sales Tactics

Red Flag: “This deal expires today” or “Only 2 spots left!”

Advice: Always get at least 2–3 quotes and take your time. Good solar companies don’t pressure —they educate.

9. Lack of Electrical Licensing or Experience

Red Flag: They subcontract the electrical work without vetting.

Ask: Who exactly will be handling the installation? Are they licensed and experienced in solar and general electrical work?

10. No References or Photos of Past Work

Red Flag: They avoid showing real installs.

Best Practice: Reputable installers proudly show you previous work and connect you with past customers if asked.

Bonus Tip:

Ask friends, neighbors, or coworkers if they’ve gone solar and who they used. Peer feedback is incredibly valuable.
